The Louvre, the former palace of the kings of France before being abandoned by Louis XIV, and it became a museum during the French Revolution, is one of the largest museums in the world with an area of 210 000m2 60 600m2 devoted exhibitions. It is located in the heart of the city of Paris, between the right bank of the Seine and the rue de Rivoli in the 1st arrondissement, in an axis that includes the Concorde, the Star, and ends in La Défense.
The Louvre Museum is rich with about 300 000 pieces, of which only 35,000 are exposed. They are divided into eight departments: Oriental Antiquities, Egyptian, Greek, Etruscan and Roman Antiquities, Paintings, Sculpture, Works of Art, Islamic Art and Visual Arts of the Middle Ages to 1848 Among the most famous pieces the museum are the Code of Hammurabi, the Venus de Milo, the Raft of the Medusa, the Mona Lisa by Leonardo da Vinci, and Liberty Leading the People by Eugène Delacroix (Louvre-Lens transferred to work in 2012). The Louvre is the most visited in the world, with 8.8 million visitors in 2011, and second in the Top 30 most visited paid tourist sites in France museum.
